January. New Perspective on the Civil War / John M. Williams
John specializes in portrait collages of great historical figures with a special interest in the Civil War. He creates intriguing portraits by piecing together small pieces of cut paper to create a likeness of his subject, revealing the person’s character as well as their historical significance. John also creates interpretations of landmark events in Civil War history such as the Bleeding Kansas era, the firing on Fort Sumter, and Reconstruction.
John’s work has been shown in the Outsider Art Fair in New York City, the SOFA exhibit in Chicago, the Slotin Folk Fest in Atlanta, and in numerous local area exhibits, most recently a portrait show at the Belmont Gallery of Art: See You, See Me. He also exhibits regularly with the Asperger’s Association of New England’s art program: Seeing with a Different Eye.
John is a member of ArcWorks, the art program of the Northeast ARC, the Concord Arts Association, and the Civil War Roundtable of Greater Boston. He is a graduate of Winchester High School and UMASS Lowell. For more information, see John’s website: johnmwilliamsfineart.com ~ Picture: Collage portrait of General Philip H. Sheridan
February. Loud Paint II / Christine Cortizas
Winchester artist Christine F. Cortizas will display her bold colored paintings in oil, acrylic, and India ink. The exhibit includes floral and abstract paintings on canvas and also drawings in India ink on rag paper. Cortizas uses vivid and vibrant colors as one of the primary elements of her paintings as well textures and designs incorporating her background in textile design. The Boston Globe described these compositions as "rigorously brushed...with a fleeting dream like presence." Even the more somber, darker works reveal an underlying hue of color that breaks through and illuminates their surface.
The artist's work has been shown at the Tufts University Art Gallery, Aidekman Arts Center; Boston Museum School Gallery; Boston Visual Arts Union; Federal Reserve Bank of Boston Gallery; Bentley College Gallery; Lexington Arts and Crafts Society; Concord's Cornelius Ayer Wood Gallery; Artsworcester, Worcester, MA., as well as private galleries in Cambridge, Lowell, and New York City.
Ms. Cortizas is a graduate of the Museum School of Fine Arts in Boston and the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York's fashion district. She also studied at the De Cordova Museum in Lincoln, and maintained a studio at Concord's Emerson Umbrella for the Art's for many years.
